This book is a physical interpretation of a project conceived by the collaborative platform for participatory art and design research projects Febrik and commissioned by Serpentine Galleries. The collective worked with young people from the Westminster Academy as part of the Youth Forum residency at the gallery to map their experiences of public spaces.
The group used video cameras to realise public actions around Church Street in the Edgware Road area of London, coupled with another set of actions inside the studio room through discussions and exercises. The dialogue between the two actions opened up a space of reflective thought and critical action.
The primary source material of the book is a series of videos documenting each participant's action. The book presents the time, description and screengrabs of each video as a continuous, uninterrupted flow. The layout of each entry is informed by the particular action and movement taken. These actions are juxtaposed with the critical questions they generate, that appear at an angle with the main flow of the book.
