Project developed while at Barnbrook
Barbrook was commissioned by leading art publisher Phaidon and Fenty to design a visual autobiography of the world’s most exciting cultural icon, Rihanna, and I was delighted to be lead designer on this project.
This compendium of over 1000 photographs offers an unfiltered glance into Rihanna's world, from her childhood in Barbados to her world tours, as well as intimate moments with family and behind the scenes shots of her creative work. It was launched at a dazzling event in New York’s Guggenheim in October 2019.
We developed the bespoke type treatment that appears on the book’s three alternate covers and interiors, as well as the book’s marketing and customised in-shop displays. The typography evokes Rihanna’s provocative and energetic voice and attitude.
The 504-page book also features 11 inserts, a pull-out poster and 7 gatefolds with custom-made collages.
The book received international media coverage and acclaim from the likes of Vogue, Pitchfork, Elle, The New York Times, and was named one of Time magazine's best photo books of 2019.
